[ Chapter 2] Ratio and Proportion (Math Notes )




The ratio of two quantities of the same kind and in the same unit is a comparison by division of the measure of two quantities.

A/B को A तथा B का अनुपात कहते हैं और इसे A:B लिखते हैं
It determines how many times one quantity is greater or lesser than the other quantity.
Thus, the ratio of two quantities 'a' and 'b' in the same units, is the fraction
a/b
and is generally expressed as a : b.
Here, 'a' is called the antecedent and 'b' is called the consequent.

1 Variations:

We say that x is directly proportional to y, if x = ky for some constant k and we write, x  y.

विलोमानुपाती

We say that x is inversely proportional to y, if xy = k for some constant k and

we write, x	1	.
	y

Duplicate Ratio :

1. Duplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a² : b²).
   Sub-duplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a : b).
   Triplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a³ : b³).
   Sub-triplicate ratio of (a : b) is (a^1/3 : b^1/3).

   If	a	=	c	, then	a + b	=	c + d	.     [componendo and dividendo]
   	b		d		a - b		c - d

Comparison of Ratios: अनुपात की तुलना 

We say that (a : b) > (c : d)	a	>	c	.
	b		d

Compounded Ratio:  (मिश्रित अनुपात:) 

The compounded ratio of the ratios: (a : b), (c : d), (e : f) is (ace : bdf).

Proportional:    समानुपाती : if X= KY where K is Constant then X is Proportional to Y
यदि X=KY जहां K अचर ho तो हम कहते हैं कि X Y के समानुपाती है 

Fourth Proportional: (चतुर्थी अनुपात ) 

If a : b = c : d, then d is called the fourth proportional to a, b, c.

Third Proportional: (तृतीया अनुपात) 

a : b = c : d, then c is called the third proportion to a and b.

Mean Proportional: (मध्य अनुपात) 

Mean proportional between a and b is under root ab.

Proportion: अनुपात 

The equality of two ratios is called proportion.

If a : b = c : d, we write a : b :: c : d and we say that a, b, c, d are in proportion.

Here a and d are called extremes, while b and c are called mean terms.

Product of means = Product of extremes.

Thus, a : b :: c : d  (b x c) = (a x d).
